Pre-registration required: contact [email protected] / (613) 678-6171

Join the beat with this hands-on workshop led by acclaimed percussionist Wayne Stoute! This family-friendly event begins with a history of percussion instruments from the instructor’s own collection, focusing particularly on how the environment helps shape the instruments that are invented and played within a culture. Then, participants will have the chance to make their own instruments using materials they’ve brought from home – and play their new instruments together as a group!

Participants are encouraged to bring in one of the following to contribute to the concluding percussion orchestral performance:

– A few glass bottles of different sizes and a couple of spoons, metal and wood if possible; OR

– A couple of empty and very dry beer or soda cans in different sizes; OR

– A couple of small- to medium-sized plastic food containers that close well; OR

– A couple of empty and dry plastic bottles of different sizes; OR

– A ceramic bowl with good ringing sound and a wooden spoon.

About the Instructor:

Drummer/percussionist Wayne Stoute comes from Trinidad, the most southerly island in the Caribbean, situated a mere 7km off the coast of Venezuela. Because of the cultural potpourri of this former British colony, Wayne grew up listening to the British Top of the Pops, American Top 40, rhythm and blues, Bollywood hit songs, rocksteady and reggae from Jamaica, the music of Venezuela and Brazil and – without a doubt – steel band and calypso music.

Wayne studied at Drummer’s Collective in New York City and Concordia University, Montreal, where he earned a BFA with a major in music. A member of the critically acclaimed Caribbean music group Jab Djab, Wayne has toured with Joanne Blouin, toured and recorded with Karen Young, Haitian pop singer Emeline Michel, South African singer Lorraine Klaasen, blues and R&B singer Kenny Hamilton, reggae artist Kali & Dub Inc., and has also recorded and performed with The Montreal Jubilation Choir, Terry Gillespie and Pat Moore.

This event is made possible thanks to the generous sponsorship of Arcana Windows & Doors (www.arcanawindows.com) and Low’s Realty Inc. (www.lowsrealty.com).
