Artist Statement
My art has always been a way for me to navigate through life’s complexities. Each painting in this exhibition is a reflection of my own experiences, thoughts, and emotions during some of the most significant moments in my life. From grieving the loss of my father during the pandemic to grappling with the role of religion and suffering in society, I’ve tried to put my feelings on canvas in a way that feels true to me.
I’m not here to deliver grand statements or profound insights. My work is more about capturing the quiet, sometimes messy, reality of being human—those moments of doubt, resilience, and everything in between. Whether it’s the strength I see in a Taurus bull, the fleeting joy of summer flowers, or the haunting silence of an old tree stump, I paint what resonates with me deeply.
This exhibition is my way of sharing those personal reflections with you. It’s an invitation to see the world through my eyes, to connect with the universal emotions we all feel, and maybe find a bit of your own story in mine.
Biography
Veronika McKerrell is a self-taught artist based in Rockland, Ontario, with a background in landscape and figurative painting from Leith School of Art and the Essential School of Painting, UK.
Her work primarily involves painting and drawing, often blending mediums to explore the borderline between realism and abstraction.
Influenced by artists like Anselm Kiefer, Francis Bacon, and Andrew Wyeth, Veronika seeks to capture the structural forms and mechanics of the human body and nature, using these to delve into deeper emotional and philosophical questions.
Her creative process is highly intuitive, guided by a trust in the subconscious to manifest personal feelings and ideas onto the canvas.
Since 2020, Veronika McKerrell has exhibited in private galleries, group shows, and juried exhibitions in Edinburgh, London, and Ottawa. She is dedicated to continuing her exploration of art, always pushing to discover new aspects of her practice.
