Artist Statement
From sand and intense heat – glass. From sheep wool and plant dyes – yarns ready for the loom. These are the materials. Colour, the exhibition’s raison d’etre.

The heat in the shop and intensity of the process is invigorating. Glass has taught me to be zen; it takes time to produce a beautiful piece and only seconds to ruin it. Nothing lasts forever… and glass is an exquisite representation of this life truth. Its inconstant states (fluid, solid, broken) embody the ever-changing nature of myself and the world around me.
Stark contrast between light and dark is featured heavily in many of my pieces as well as impressionistic renderings of the natural world. I am constantly working to push the limits of my technical and artistic abilities. Perfection is an illusion… but practice does afford an artist bountiful results. I believe technique is the servant of artistic expression, and I am dedicated to spending as much time as possible in the studio honing my craft.
Seeing things in fresh ways can provoke, enlighten, and shift one’s reality into something new and wonderful.

For centuries, the spinner at the wheel, the dyer at her vat, and the weaver at his loom have blended their arts to clothe and adorn us. As a handweaver living in the digital age, I strive to bring to my work something of the spirit of joy felt by all who work with their hands.
Weaving technique can be quite complex but I prefer the simplicity of the timeless ‘plain weave’ which allows me to explore the many possibilities of ‘bent light’. As with my music, I allow improvisation to determine the colour schemes. Put simply: I start with one colour and ask it: What colour do you want next? Crazy, I know, but it works for me.
