Shelley Freeman

The main focus of Shelley Freeman’s artwork is nature-based: empty, dark spaces existing within natural phenomena such as caves, rocks, and ice formations, and man-made tunnels and abandoned mines.

Intrigued by the link between illusion and depth, Freeman recently created 16 paintings of aquatic plants viewed from a lake-bottom perspective. Inspired by photos taken while hiking and caving, she builds multi-layered, textured surfaces with oils and plaster which she then gouges and sands. Apart from numerous solo and group exhibitions, her artworks figure in collections in Australia, Canada, Japan, New Zealand, USA, and Wales.
