Artist's Statement

I am an artist who explores the interconnection between individual and community, through my personal relationships. Formed from the standpoints of multiple members of a family, these photographs are displayed to present the “in-between” space that relates to a single person as part of a co-existence.  I am interested in separating the individual members of a family in each photograph to bring them back together again in a series. The portraits present how we understand each other as well as ourselves through different roles of perception. This oscillating process allows one set of meanings to manifest and expand through the pleasure of representation. As one becomes more than a distant relation to the subject, it draws the individuals closer while dividing them. The portraits that are created express the desire of interconnection between people and the separation that exists when one person looks at another. This common understanding produces familiarity.
